Wonderful game tonight against Mateusz Surma 1p European Professional gave me the next lesson in the series “How to win a won game” which I believe I will be learning forever. When playing against such a strong player, first of all there is the psychological pressure to perform well and second is the pressure you give yourself when you actually perform well, which happened to be quite interesting in this case.
We played two games and he crushed me totally in the first game. When playing someone stronger than you are, without any exaggeration you can feel his strength in every move he plays, which reminds me of the quote :
The board is a mirror of the mind of the players as the moments pass. When a master studies the record of a game he can tell at what point greed overtook the pupil, when he became tired, when he fell into stupidity, and when the maid came by with tea.
We played a second game and I showed more fighting spirit and I got a chance, because as he commented after the game, he did not make an exchange and he died with a group, which allowed me to take the lead in the game. However, later when the game was really getting more complicated, since a professional will never give up and give you the win. I knew that I am ahead and according to AI, I had about 96%, this is pretty much the moment where after the game he said “You could play anything”, except my move 🙂
I got to make a magical self killing move which is about 62% drop and to die with a group of mine which is pretty much unkillable. I am not even sure if this is a lesson to be more focused or just a lesson to play more games under pressure. In any case, you can see that a 5d can also misread a 10k tsumego, weird things happen. It was great to play with Mateusz and this game was really good practice and joy.
White’s group on the right side died, so the only thing black has to do in order to win, is to invade left side and focus on white weaknesses to settle his group. This attachment is a good way to use his stones and to take advantage of white shape issues.
Black managed to make life and to use white weaknesses. This is the crucial point where white plays this Atari of black’s stone. I connected which you can see below on the picture that it is a huge mistake. It would be a good practice for readers to find themselves why I should have played the other marked move instead of connect !
The win graph makes it easy to spot my huge mistake, a very intense game !
