This is the first article written with allowance of EGF Academy to spread educational and entertaining materials with purpose popularizing the project to reach more people willing to study Go to achieve higher levels.
Alexander Dinerchtein 3-dan professional player of the Korean Baduk(Go) Association and 7-time European Go champion is one of the teachers in the project and this lesson is made by him.
He shows several examples of recently translated into Russian, book named “10 Go Proverbs” written by Wang Yuhui 7 dan professional.
I decided to pick the most surprising example of choice in fuseki situation and make the article look like you are right there on the lecture.
I want to once again thank to EGF Academy and to Alexander Dinerchtein for this wonderful opportunity.
What is best for white now on the board? Alexander Dinerchtein says that in this position we will see different opinion of Wang Yuhui and Elf Open Go. Some people like D and some players prefer moves like B, no one mentioned A as a possibility.
Chinese professional played this shoulder hit in the real game, but Wang Yuhui 7p thinks that this is a bad move. Although white can finish his shape with A next, it is not enough.
The reason white is not good is that Black got solid points while white is still under attack and later by attacking this group black can easily destroy white’s moyo. Wang Yuhui thinks this is a not a good plan for white.
Wang Yuhui thinks it is better to play for moyo.
His plan is to play this move, cap to make moyo versus moyo. (me)Watching this lecture I am like : Oh really? This cap? It is almost a random move in the center, whenever I play such moves they are always bad… let’s continue-
Keima – keima (repeat, repeat), then black defends with 6 and white can try invasion at san-san. Of course it is a matter of taste to play like 1 and make huge moyo or not. It is always fun to play like this in the center.
But who is favorable, what do you think?
White’s moyo is bigger, but black’s moyo is more solid.
Wang Yuhui thinks it is good for white.
But ELF Open Go thinks that black is clearly favorable.
So completely different opinions we can see between AI and Professionals…( I love these lessons exactly because such content, soon I will provide Catalin’s lesson as well, so you can see another wonderful lesson.
ELF Open Go thinks it is time to invade, and white can invade like this or A.
This is the first plan of ELF, to create a running fight, or –
Or white can think about this invasion and decide whether to make the game complicated by wedge at A or just play honte at B.
To play like this is more common and ELF Open Go thinks it is good to play invasion and settle like this 1-2 and make base.
Because if white plays like this for moyo, black’s territory is too solid. Furthermore, what do you think, is it possible for white to live now or not? What is the best way to answer to white’s invasion, A or B?
Maybe tenuki would be the best now and later black can decide whether to play A to kill or play B to make ko.
White wants to get this shape to make ko, white’s plan.
Black can try to kill later like this, 1-2-3 and then after white explore aji with cut, black can just extend. Locally it is a loss, but white can think about some attachment at A. Such a bad aji on the top says Dinerchtein.
But later if black is solid on the outside, black can try.
So if black wants to kill, black can try this move at 1 and if white plays kosumi at 2, black can try to kill at 3, however, it is again dangerous.
So, locally white is dead, but it looks a bit dangerous for black. Most probably the best way for black is to keep it simple by playing just block and take sente to tenuki somewhere else instead of trying to kill the entire group directly.
Although there was not much about proverbs discussed in this lesson about the proverbs book, he prefers to show positions and make students think, he likes that what is practical and he choose really wonderful examples from the book which shows completely different opinion of AI’s and Professional ideas.
