Viktor Lin – Matthias Terwey Brief Analysis With AI

Viktor Lin - Matthias Terwey Brief Analysis With AI 1

Let’s take a look on a very interesting game between Viktor Lin 6-dan taking black, player from Austria and Matthias Terwey 4-dan German player.

A very amazing fighting game with mirror opening and a very important lesson brought to us by Leela. I hope this short analysis is helpful !

Viktor Lin - Matthias Terwey Brief Analysis With AI 2

We can see a mirror fuseki and the next move which black played was on top right, however, LZ seems to prefer to jump on lower side. 55 % winrate for white, I guess it is expected, since it is mirror.

The mirror continued and finally black took the tengen with 19 and after white invaded with 20, it seems like white has 56,7 %, very interesting.

Viktor Lin - Matthias Terwey Brief Analysis With AI 4

However, the tengen was not really Leela’s favourite move. There were two choices such as invading on top left or peep on lower right which were better to play. The thing is that after invasion on top left or any other move, the human will continue playing mirror while Leela does not really consider that.

Viktor Lin - Matthias Terwey Brief Analysis With AI 5

White’s invasion was quite cool, but Leela seems to prefer the ordinary shoulder hit, both are fine of course.

After black covered with 21, the sequence up to 30 was full of fighting spirit, however, black should not have played the next move at 31, as you can see, the blue move is better to exchange before defending.

Viktor Lin - Matthias Terwey Brief Analysis With AI 7

White also had to play more active according to AI and to not make the exchange in the center.

Viktor Lin - Matthias Terwey Brief Analysis With AI 8

The sequence up to 40, shows that more or less white succeeded. Black defended at 31, which we saw that it is passive. White exchanged 32 and then attached at 34 to be able to jump at 36. Black’s move at 39 helped white quite a lot, because white got to atari at 40.

Viktor Lin - Matthias Terwey Brief Analysis With AI 9

Instead of that, black had to just take the stone and avoid helping white settle his group. There isn’t really efficient way for white to play on the right side.

Viktor Lin - Matthias Terwey Brief Analysis With AI 10

White played a really bad ko-threat at 48 ! White ataried at 42 and black cut at 43 not giving white an easy time, white took and black extended at 45 to put even more pressure. After defending at 46 and black taking the ko, white decided to play ko threat at 48, but this ko-threat strengthened black’s group a lot.

Viktor Lin - Matthias Terwey Brief Analysis With AI 11

White had to simply extend without strengthening black’s group too much.

Viktor Lin - Matthias Terwey Brief Analysis With AI 12

Here it comes a very interesting moment where both players were missing out a very important move, as you can see black played 51 and white neglected it and started fight on the right side, but was it necessary and also, did black really need to answer?

Viktor Lin - Matthias Terwey Brief Analysis With AI 13

According to AI, for white to extend was more important.

Viktor Lin - Matthias Terwey Brief Analysis With AI 14

For black to atari instead of answering on right side was also more important, seems like a key point according to Leela !

Viktor Lin - Matthias Terwey Brief Analysis With AI 15

White answered on top right, but again to play the extension on lower side was more important ! It seems to be shining point of thickness and strength.

Viktor Lin - Matthias Terwey Brief Analysis With AI 16

Once again ! Over and over again, I had definitely fun time looking at this game!

Viktor Lin - Matthias Terwey Brief Analysis With AI 17

You see, even after white connected, to split white was not really a big move, but to atari on lower side was significantly bigger.

Viktor Lin - Matthias Terwey Brief Analysis With AI 18

Black connected at 61 and white took the stone with 62-64 to which black was forced to make life in the corner with 65. White tried to escape with 66, but it was a huge mistake. Black got to play 67 and force white to make life with 70 and got chance to play on lower side, however, he continued putting pressure on white’s group on the top.

Viktor Lin - Matthias Terwey Brief Analysis With AI 19

For white to play atari on top and jump on the right side, seems like a better way to play according to AI. The reason is that it is simply hard to kill white and if black cannot kill white, then the profit black can get is not enough.

Viktor Lin - Matthias Terwey Brief Analysis With AI 20

Black put pressure with 71 and white made shape up to 78 which let black atari at 79, so black took the most important point. With winrate of 88,7, the game is quite favorable for black at this point.

Viktor Lin - Matthias Terwey Brief Analysis With AI 21

As you can see, AI still suggests to take the big point on the lower side instead of settling the group. The reason is the same, it does not really think that the group can easily die.

Viktor Lin - Matthias Terwey Brief Analysis With AI 22

Black started fighting since he has center thickness, to which white responded a bit too passive by playing 84-86.

Viktor Lin - Matthias Terwey Brief Analysis With AI 23

White should not really defend with the honte keima on lower right, instead to cut on left is more aggressive and since white is behind, this is the best to do at the moment.

Viktor Lin - Matthias Terwey Brief Analysis With AI 24

After black’s attachment at 91, white cut at 92 and extended, black played 95 to defend his lower side, white enlarged his potential with 96 and then black played a questionable move at 97 ! White had a chance to fight back, but white played passively at 98.

Viktor Lin - Matthias Terwey Brief Analysis With AI 25

White had to play the blue move and fight back, this is pretty much the only way to complicate the game at this point. Since black did not play 97 at the blue move himself, he gave chance to white, because he was careless.

Viktor Lin - Matthias Terwey Brief Analysis With AI 26

After black defends at 101, white tried to fight a bit with 102, but not much happened and black let himself suffer a loss in the corner with 109 just to finish the game easier.

Viktor Lin - Matthias Terwey Brief Analysis With AI 27

At the end black invaded at 111 in order to use the weakness at 113 and he finished the game, giving white only 4,9% chance to win. Although there are many games where humans can reverse game even with 1 % chance, in this game black is too solid and there is not much white can do. The whole game was really full of kiai and it was entertaining to look at it !
